West African Trade Bracelet

$37.61
SKU WASTMANILLA

A form of money used in West Africa, manillas are associated with the slave trade. As far back as the 15th century, Portuguese maritime traders reported the use of bracelet-shaped bronze that they called manilha, meaning "hand ring." This manilla is thought to have been manufactured in France or England somewhere during the 18 or 19th century, at the height of the slave trade.
